Cunningham announces funding for school libraries

PALOS – State Senator Bill Cunningham secured more than $18,000 in grants to provide resources for local public school libraries.

“School libraries play a major role in the lives of many students,” said Cunningham, a Democrat who represents portions of Chicago and the Southwest Suburbs. “Giving these school libraries additional resources will help the next generation of students succeed.”

More than $1.3 million was awarded to 2,484 Illinois public school libraries through the Secretary of State’s School District Library Grant Program. Resources and services supported through the grant include library books, e-books, audiobooks, periodicals, multilingual materials, technology and programs.

The following school districts in the 18th District received grant funding:

• Alsip-Hazelgreen-Oak Lawn District 126
• Atwood Heights School District 125
• Chicago Ridge School District 127.5
• Community High School District 218
• Evergreen Park Community High School District 231
• Evergreen Park Elementary School District 124
• North Palos School District 117
• Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123
• Palos Community Consolidated School District 118
• Palos Heights School District 128
• Worth Elementary District 127

The grants, awarded once every fiscal year, will support school library services for over 1 million students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade across the state.
