CHICAGO — Friends and family have set up a GoFundMe for Chicago Police Sgt. Ed Dougherty, who died unexpectedly on Saturday. Dougherty leaves behind his wife Margaret and two sons, Ryan and Liam.

Known as “Ed” or “Eddie” to his family, friends and colleagues, Dougherty, 52, was a decorated police sergeant of the Chicago Police Department, having served the city for over 24 years, with the majority of his career spent in the 008th (Chicago Lawn) District.

He had suffered a medical issue in November and was unable to return to work, his friend, Michael Poppish, said in a statement on GoFundMe.

“He was a dedicated co-worker, cherished friend, and brother who will forever be known for his love of family, his dog Cooper, the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!), and spirited discussions about current events,” Poppish said.

The fund will assist his family with educational expenses, bills, and immediate needs. Donations can also be made directly to his wife, Margaret Dougherty, through the Chicago Patrolmen’s Federal Credit Union.
