CHICAGO — You scream, I scream, we’re all screaming because Original Rainbow Cone’s Beverly location at 9233 S. Western Ave. will remain open all winter. The shop will be open 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. daily.

For those unfamiliar with the many charms of an Original Rainbow Cone, the 96-year-old tasty treat is an ice cream cone piled high with five flavors, including chocolate, strawberry, Palmer house (a combination of vanilla and cherry with walnuts) and pistachio ice cream, sliced into segments and topped off with orange sherbet.

Starting Nov. 14, the iconic Beverly ice cream parlor will be offering candy cane ice cream for a limited time in a cup, cone or shake. In addition to ice cream cones, the store sells quarts, ice cream cakes and rolls.

In 2019, Original Rainbow Cone third-generation owner Lynn Sapp entered into a unique franchise partnership with the Buonavolanto family’s Buona Beef, that has allowed the ice cream shop to expand to new locations in the Chicago area.

Locally, in addition to the Beverly location, Original Rainbow Cone can be found in Lombard, Chicago’s Navy Pier (closed for winter), Darien, Mount Prospect and Harwood Heights. Two other locations – Skokie and Lakemoor – are combined stores with Buona Beef. Original Rainbow Cone also runs a fleet of ice cream trucks that crisscross the Chicago area, and, has expanded to Florida with four locations.

Original Rainbow Cone was the brainchild of Joseph Sapp, an Ohio orphan who came to Chicago to work as a Buick mechanic, according to a company bio. Ice cream was one of the few luxuries Sapp was able to enjoy as a child. In 1926, Joseph and his wife, Katherine, started the Original Rainbow Cone. Not satisfied with single flavor cones, Joseph and Katherine hit upon the five-flavor combo that still prevails. A few years later, the Sapps bought the building at 92nd Street and Western Avenue, which still stands today, serving millions of sliced-not-scooped ice cream cones for 96 years.
