Original Rainbow Cone Debuts 4 New Flavors For First Time In 98 Years
Four new "sliced creations" including Orange Dream, Chocolate Obsession, Minty City and Cosmic Birthday, will debut at Chicago-area stores.

CHICAGO — For the first time in 98 years, Original Rainbow Cone is adding new flavors to its repertoire for the first time since its founding on Chicago’s South Side in Beverly.
A Chicago staple since 1926, Original Rainbow Cone is introducing four “sliced creations” including Orange Dream, Chocolate Obsession, Minty City and Cosmic Birthday.
“We’re not just adding to our menu, we’re crafting a new chapter in Rainbow Cone’s storied history,” Joe Buonavolanto III, said in a news release, executive vice president of The Buona Companies, the parent company of Rainbow Cone. “As we rapidly introduce the brand to new markets, we’re blending innovation with tradition.”

Minty City offers a rich pairing of mint chocolate chip and chocolate ice cream.
Birthday Cake features a sliced combo of Superman and Birthday Cake ice cream.
The four new flavors were created by Rainbow Cone’s culinary director Tony Scheri. Each new flavor can be served on a cake or waffle cone and offers a new twist to their classic ice cream flavors.
Original Rainbow Cone was the brainchild of Joseph Sapp, an Ohio orphan who came to Chicago to work as a Buick mechanic, according to a company bio. Ice cream was one of the few luxuries Sapp was able to enjoy as a kid. In 1926, Joseph and his wife, Katherine, started Original Rainbow Cone. Not satisfied with single flavor cones, Joseph and Katherine hit upon the five-flavor power combo that still prevails today.
Don’t worry, you can still get the traditional cone of Orange Sherbet, Pistachio, Palmer House, Strawberry and Chocolate piled high into a rainbow.
“Our new sliced creations build upon the legacy of our iconic five-flavor ice cream cone, and we’re eager to share them with our newest fans as well as those who have enjoyed Rainbow Cone for generations.”
The four new flavorful creations will be available at all Chicago-area locations.
