CHICAGO — The Original Rainbow Cone ice cream trucks will be rolling throughout Chicagoland this summer, and are ready to come to your community fest, block party or other special event, spreading rainbows of joy.

Last year, the debut of Chicago Rainbow Cone’s ice cream trucks quickly became a staple of the summer landscape. The historic ice cream purveyor launched five ice cream trucks, each named after one of the layers that make up the famous Rainbow Cone, serving up delicious Rainbow Cone ice cream and treats.

For those unfamiliar with the many charms of an Original Rainbow Cone, the tasty treat is an ice cream cone piled high with five flavors, including chocolate, strawberry, Palmer house and pistachio ice cream, sliced into segments and topped off with orange sherbet.

Original Rainbow Cone was the brainchild of Joseph Sapp, an Ohio orphan who came to Chicago to work as a Buick mechanic, according to a company bio. Ice cream was one of the few luxuries Sapp was able to enjoy as a child. In 1926, Joseph and his wife, Katherine, started the Original Rainbow Cone. Not satisfied with single flavor cones, Joseph and Katherine hit upon the five-flavor combo that still prevails today. A few years later, the Sapps bought the building at 92nd Street and Western Avenue on Chicago's South Side, which still stands today, serving millions of cones across the decades.

Each of the five ice cream trucks are named after one of the flavors that make up the famous Rainbow Cone: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer house, pistachio and orange sherbet.
