Leah Romer finished in the top five at the Robert Morris University Culinary Arts Regional Feb. 10 to qualify for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America state finals in March.

During the competition, students enrolled in occupational culinary arts/food service training programs were asked to work as members of a team of students from different schools to produce a quality meal using industrial culinary arts/food service techniques and equipment. Prior to the event, participants were given three menus to practice without being aware of what menu would actually be chosen the day of the competition.

The teams were given 30 minutes to work together to figure out a time management plan and to gather all of their ingredients for their menus. At the end of the 30 minutes the teams were then given one hour to prepare three dishes. This year’s menu was mushroom pork scaloppini, rice pilaf and apple and cheddar turnovers .

More than 50 students were divided into sections and judged on safety and appearance, team organization, food production, and food taste/presentation.
