Bolingbrook Man Wins Channahon 5K

Keith Browning, a Bolingbrook-native, won the Firefly 5K in Channahon.

A 40-year-old Bolingbrook man training for the won the Firefly 5K race in Channahon Thursday.

Keith Browning, competing in the 40-44 age group, finished witha  time of 17:25.80, beating out the second place finisher by more than 30 seconds.

According to one report, Browning, who said he usually runs 10 to 15 5Ks each year, although that number has been down this year, says that the reason runners get faster for longer distances by running a race like a 5K has to do with anaerobic threshold.

"When you run faster, when you practice that it takes less effort to run a given pace," Browning told the Morris Daily Herald. "So, if you're running a 3:20 marathon and you do a bunch of speed work with the same level of effort which you can measure by your heart rate, you might run a 3:10. How exactly is beyond me, but that's the story."
