Mild Winter Means Boon for Bolingbrook’s Coffers

The lack of white has had Bolingbrook saving some green so far this winter season.

Village officials budgeted $996,500 for the season, which includes salt costs, snow removal, vehicle maintenance and employee overtime.

It was a year ago this week the Chicago area was blanketed with more than 15 inches of snow.

To date this season, Bolingbrook has only had to contend with seven winter storms, which used about $215, 400 of the village’s coffers, said Michael Drey, Bolingbrook’s director of public works.

“An average winter usually is 20 storms,” he said. “If the mild winter continues we anticipate savings.”

This week, temperatures have been about 50 degrees.

The last mild winter season Bolingbrook had was in late 2001 and early 2002. Drey said the village only had seven storms.

However, snow showers are anticipated this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
