Valley View Board Honors Battle Of The Book, Math Contest Winners

WILL COUNTY, IL — At its Monday meeting, the Valley View Board of Education recognized winners of two interschool competitions, the Battle of the Books and the Middle School Math Contest.

The District's annual Battle of the Books competition saw Jonas E. Salk Elementary School as the winning team. The Board honored students Regina Carino, Meadow Muhs, Hannah Siska, Shreya Srivathsan and Julianna Talbott.

Sponsor Lisa Arnold said the team competed last year as fourth graders, and came in fourth place, and set a goal to make it back to the battle this year.

"They answered 39 out of 40 questions correct," Arnold said. "We are so proud of their hard work and determination. We're going to miss them and their reading enthusiasm next year."

As for the District's 12th annual middle school math contest, the Jane Addams Middle School math team came out victorious. The team won the overall competition by finishing first in the seventh grade competition, first in the Algebra competition, and second in the sixth grade and eighth grade competition.

"[The students on the team] believe in pushing the boundaries of their understand and embracing the beauty of mathematics with unwavering enthusiam and team spirit," Mathletes Coach Alka Chugh said.

Students included Julissa De La Cerda, Vanessa Sprinceana, Ezra Tharu, Srivar Vemuru, Yousuf Awan, Riley Campbell, Marissa Cherry, Vincent Hundt, Finn McDermott, Alex Manas, Mauricio Paniagua, Nghi Pham, Ricardo De La Cerda, Leah Kelly, Jasmine Ramos, Jonathan Salazar, Duncan Wickert, Zach Dewitt, Abdul Hasan, Jesse Rahn, Issac Reyes and Jonathan Schnute.
