The two-time American League All-Star outfielder urged students to “make good decisions now so that will make it easier for you down the road,” adding their middle school years are a time to “enjoy great friendships” but to also work hard at everything they do.

“The only way to get better is to go out there and do it,” he said.

Granderson, who grew up in Chicago’s south suburbs and played baseball for the University of Illinois at Chicago, expressed pride at being one of only 37 current Major League Baseball players who have a college degree. He urged students to make sure they get a college education.

“Take the opportunity now to learn and succeed,” he said.

At the end of the assembly, Addams Principal Chris Schaeflein presented Granderson with an honorary membership in the Mustangs Chapter of the Guys Read Club and several Addams T-shirts.
