Blood Drive Planned as Buffalo Grove Singers Support Member Battling MDS

Blood drive honors a founding member recovering from MDS, as the Buffalo Grove Singers rally around Lynn in her courageous fight.

For more than 30 years, the Buffalo Grove Singers have brought music and community spirit to the region — and now that spirit is being poured into supporting one of their own, Lynn Garb.

Lynn, a founding member who has performed with the group since its start in 1993, was diagnosed this year with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a condition similar to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Her treatment included a recent stem cell transplant and required 25 blood transfusions and eight platelet transfusions, each one essential to her survival.

Even as she continues weekly checkups, Lynn says the outpouring of support from her BG Singers family has carried her through.

This group has been by my side the whole way, Lynn said.
My situation could have been so much worse. Having them with me means everything.”

Now, the Singers are rallying around her in the most meaningful way they can: by hosting a community blood drive in Lynn’s honor.

Mike Garfield, a BG Singer and member of the Buffalo Grove Blood Commission, said the cause became urgent once they learned what Lynn was facing.

We always wanted to increase blood donations,” Mike said.
“But when one of our own needed blood to survive, it lit the fire under us. We want a community that’s healthy and supported.”

Lynn has been part of the BG Singers’ story from the beginning. She was there when 65 adults showed up—far more than expected—at the group’s very first meeting in 1993. Thirty years later, the Singers continue to live up to their nickname: The Chorus That Cares.”

Blood donations remain urgently needed across Illinois. Every donor can help patients like Lynn—neighbors, parents, grandparents, and community members who rely on blood during cancer treatment, surgery, and emergencies.
