Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band Returns With Annual Spring Concert

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — It wouldn't be spring without a special concert from the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band. This Sunday, the group's 23rd annual spring concert is scheduled for the Stevenson High School Performing Arts Center, 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire.

According to the Village of Buffalo Grove, "We've Got RHYTHM" will feature music from around the world, exploring the use of rhythm in various genres. The concert begins at 7 p.m.

"This performance will explore the many and diverse uses of rhythm found in music throughout the ages in many cultures and musical formats,"BGSB Director Howard Green said. "We will show how the use of rhythm contributes to our enjoyment and understanding of music and culture, along with melody, harmony and instrumentation."

In addition to showcasing rhythms found in everything from the Broadway stage to ballet, the concert will feature folk and dance tunes from Europe, Asia and Latin America. Selections will include:

  • Borodin's Polovtsian Dances
  • excerpts from the last movement of Mahler's, "Third Symphony"
  • exotic rhythms from Alfred Reed's, "Armenian Dances," Bernstein's, "Mambo," from "West Side Story"
  • "naughty" rhythms of the can-can from France
  • flashy, fast and furious rhythms of the Cuban dance clubs in "Havana Nights"

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which is also Sunday, the band will feature the ever-popular "Danzon No. 2" of Arturo Marquez and the "Huapango of Moncayo. "

The BGSB is a program of the Village of Buffalo Grove, Green and Allison Rakickas, associate conductor.

Ticket prices for adults are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Prices for seniors (55 and older) and students with ID are $8. Veterans and current military service personnel are free at the door with ID. Advance tickets can be purchased online at tickets.bgsb.org and in person at Buffalo Grove Village Hall, located at 50 Raupp Blvd., or from any band member.
