BUFFALO GROVE, IL — Construction to reconstruct a stretch of a heavily trafficked stretch of a Buffalo Grove roadway is soon scheduled to begin, which will force local motorists to make slight adjustments to their commutes.

Lake County officials on Thursday said that the 1.2-mile portion of Aptakisic Road between Illinois Route 83 and Buffalo Grove Road will begin soon. The county did not provide a definite start date for construction to begin but said that the corridor on which an estimated 20,000 vehicles a day has reached capacity.

The county said that new development and the lack of alternative routes have both contributed to traffic reaching the level it has, which has made the improvements necessary. The project, officials said, will remove a “pinch point” at the west end of the roadway by providing a five-lane roadway cross-section from Route 83 to Buffalo Grove Road.

The project, which is part of $88 million in Lake County improvement plans, will also fill in a bike path and sidewalk gaps, the county said in Thursday’s announcement.

Once completed, the 1.2-mile stretch of Aptakisic Road will feature two lanes traveling in both directions as well as a road median with left-hand turn lanes, the county said. The project will also include traffic signal improvements at Route 83, Brandywyn Lane, and Buffalo Grove Road.

No road closures are expected during the road work, the county said. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction. Temporary lane closures may occur a few hours per day to complete major work, officials said. Drivers are urged to drive carefully, watch for flaggers, and be aware of trucks entering and exiting the job site.

Updates to the project and documents related to the construction work are available on the county’s website.
