1 In Custody Following Wheeling Hotel Shooting That Prompted Large Police Presence
Nearby schools were placed on lockdown Thursday as a number of local police departments worked to secure the hotel and arrest a suspect.
WHEELING, IL — A man is in custody following a hotel shooting Thursday afternoon that led to a large police presence involving multiple jurisdictions, including armed SWAT officers, and put several nearby schools on lockdown. Another man, who police found in the lobby of MainStay Suites Northbrook Wheeling with a gunshot wound, remains in stable condition at Glenbrook Hospital.
Wheeling police said several nearby schools, including National Louis University, were placed on "secure" status out of an abundance of caution. While an investigation into the incident continues, police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Police were called to the hotel at 8000 Capitol Drive at around 11:26 a.m. for a report of a man with a gun. Upon arrival, police found the victim in the lobby with non-life-threatening injuries, and he was taken to the hospital.

Wheeling police, with the assistance of neighboring jurisdictions, were able to "quickly" secure the hotel to ensure the safety of guests and staff. The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System was activated to assist in taking the involved person into custody without incident. A firearm was recovered at the scene. No one else is being sought at this time in connection with the incident, according to police.
As Patch previously reported, the Wheeling Police Department had sent out a public safety announcement at 1:12 p.m. Thursday, asking residents to "stay clear" of the area, acknowledging "a large police presence." At around 2:20 p.m., police gave an update that the situation had been resolved without incident.

NBC Chicago had reported multiple police cars from neighboring areas, including Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Riverwoods, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, and Wheeling, were in the parking lot of the hotel as the situation unfolded. Armed SWAT officers were spotted wearing helmets with long guns and shields, as documented by a photographer for the outlet.
