Road Widening Project On Aptakisic Road Moves Forward In Buffalo Grove

The project between Illinois Route 83 and Buffalo Grove Road is expected to begin during the summer construction season.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — A high traffic area on Aptakisic Road will soon see improvements, with a project scheduled to begin this summer. The Lake County Division of Transportation will oversee the road widening project between Route 83 and Buffalo Grove Road.

The work area on the road will stretch between portions of Buffalo Grove and Long Grove.

According to Marah Altenberg, Lake County District 19 board member, traffic bottlenecks on Aptakisic will be eased when the road is widened to five lanes. A middle turn lane is also expected to make the road safer.

"This is exciting news for this high traffic area," Altenberg said in her most current email newsletter. "You may see crews out in the next few weeks performing necessary tree trimming and utility relocations, so the project is prepped and ready for construction season."

In addition, a multi-use path will be added on the north side of the roadway and a sidewalk will be added on the south side. Altenberg said the bike path and sidewalk will connect up with existing bike paths that go north and south on Buffalo Grove Road and to the west towards downtown Long Grove.

The existing roadway varies from a two-lane rural section to multi-lane urban sections near the Illinois Route 83 and Buffalo Grove Road intersections, according to the LCDOT website. Current traffic volumes in this corridor have neared capacity for the existing roadway, and that additional development and lack of alternate routes will add to capacity demands.

An existing "open" ditch drainage system will also be replaced and upgraded with curb and gutter through the project limits. According to LCDOT, this means that "storm water runoff will be collected and carried through pipes to a suitable outlet off the roadway."

The LCDOT says on its website that land acquisition for this project is currently ongoing and detailed construction documents are being prepared.
