Wheeling School Receives $20K Grant To Launch Mariachi Band Program

The Illinois Arts Council awarded the creative learning grant to Community Consolidated School District 21 for Holmes Middle School.

WHEELING, IL — Aimed at connecting students with their cultural heritage and expanding arts education, the Illinois Arts Council has awarded a $20,000 creative learning grant to Community Consolidated School District 21 to launch a mariachi band program at Holmes Middle School during the second semester of the current school year.

According to the district, the new program will introduce students to traditional mariachi instruments including guitar, vihuela, guitarrón, trumpet and violin. The grant funds the purchase of instruments, instructional materials and compensation for a teaching artist with mariachi expertise.

Officials said the idea came from a student suggestion, and "reflects growing interest" in culturally relevant arts programs across the district.

"This program was inspired by our students," Superintendent Dr. Michael Connolly said. "They wanted a space that reflects their culture and allows them to grow through music. We’re proud to make that vision a reality."

The district said the mariachi program will begin as an after-school club, while also serving as a pathway to the mariachi program already established at neighboring Wheeling High School. Similar opportunities are also being looked into for Cooper and London middle schools.
