The Wheeling Township Community Mental Health Board (WTCMHB) is now accepting grant applications from agencies that serve Township residents with needs related to mental illness, intellectual or developmental disabilities, or substance use disorder. The deadline for applying is August 1, 2025.

The mission of the WTCMHB is to ensure that community members are not only aware of the different services and service providers available to address these challenges, but also that they are accessible from a financial standpoint. An additional, but equally important goal, is to help reduce any stigma associated with seeking treatment.

“I see our Community Mental Health Board as an important way to help care for our neighbors who are most in need and are challenged with mental illness, intellectual or developmental disabilities or substance use disorders,” said WTCMHB President Sue Hayes. “We strongly encourage any organization that serves our residents through these specialties to apply for a grant to support either ongoing initiatives, or projects that will further benefit our community.”

Hayes added that an assessment of services in Wheeling Township was conducted by Harper College found that needs are not currently being met, in large part, due to a shortage of service providers, or their ability to provide additional services due to budget constraints.

The goals of the WTCMHB will be made possible by helping to educate the public about agencies that provide these services, as well as through yearly grants awarded for agencies to expand their services to reach more residents.

“Our job is to reach out to agencies and find out what they need from us to serve more people and get them off wait lists, which is especially prevalent related to mental health needs. We need these organizations to apply for a grant and explain how they can help us as partners to better serve our residents,” Hayes added.

Qualified agencies must provide detailed descriptions of their service offerings, along with budgetary information, in addition to other requirements that are found in the application.
