Students followed their regular schedules through the day, after the shelter-in-place was initiated, though outdoor physical education classes were moved inside.

Willowbrook officers were called at 10:52 a.m. to the 7400 block of Tennessee Drive for a report of a gunshot wound, according to police, and officers canvassed the area.

No injuries were discovered. Police found a patio window to the west of Willowbrook Apartments, at Brookdale Apartments in Darien, was damaged by a bullet, according to police. No one was home when police arrived.

“A shelter-in-place directive is typically used when a situation arises that requires us to limit or control movement of students and staff within the school and to ensure that no one enters or exits the school for a period of time,” according to the statement. “A shelter-in-place directive is used when a situation poses no imminent danger or threat to the safety of students or staff and the expectation is to allow for most normal school operations, including teaching and learning activities, to continue.”

Hinsdale South High School began following a shelter-in-place directive Tuesday around 11:30 a.m. because of police activity in the area.

The police activity is not at the school, but at a nearby location, according to Karen Warner, director of communications for Hinsdale Township High School District 86.

She said the shelter-in-place was triggered when building administration heard police were at a scene near the school.

Students have not changed classes since the shelter-in-place began, but that might change as the situation develops, Warner said, but most importantly, no one is moving in or out of the school building.

Warner said parents have been contacted, and all students and staff are safe and unharmed.

Ted V. Schauer, alderman Ward One in Darien, posted on Facebook that the shelter-in-place was caused by shots fired at Tennessee Apartments in Willowbrook.
