"Investigators are continuing this investigation as an incident of 'swatting' in which case a computer is used to spoof their calling location and phone number to make a false police report," said the Hinsdale Police in a press announcement.

"I've heard of [people using technology like this] before," said Burr Ridge Deputy Police Chief Tim Vaclav. "Some of it can be pretty involved when you go through computer or electronic devices. It can be somewhat impossible if not impossible to trace back."

Vaclav said incidents like this endanger others, and people should be aware of the gravity of this crime.

"It's certainly a very dangerous thing to do. Officers attempt to make it to a scene to assist quickly and can become involved in accidents often involving innocent persons," said Vaclav. "It takes resources from surrounding towns, so if another major incident occurs close by, it could cause issues."

Residents of the streets surrounding the 600 Block of South Bruner said the event was very disruptive to the neighborhood. They say police armed with rifles knocked on their doors at approximately 6 p.m. Monday night to warn them to stay inside, and news helicopters circled the area.
