2 Men In Fight With Off-Duty Chicago Cops Charged

The tussle with 2 off-duty Chicago police officers happened early Friday outside a River North nightclub.

CHICAGO, IL — Two men face battery and assault charges after a fight Friday between two off-duty Chicago police officers in front of a River North club, ABC 7 Eyewitness News reports. Elijah Murphy, 21, was charged with felony aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery in a public place, while Denzel Peterson, 26, is charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault of a peace officer.

The fight happened around 2 a.m. Friday, June 23, outside a nightclub near LaSalle Drive and Hubbard Street. Two off-duty officers — 25 and 32 years old — and a woman wre confronted by three strangers after the two exited the club, the report added. The cops and strangers tussled with one another — the woman did not participate in the fight — and the older off-duty officer received injuries to his face, while the 25-year-old cop refused medical attention, the report stated. The woman had a "fainting spell," and she and the 32-year-old officer were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the report added.

Peterson was arrested nearby soon after the fight in the first block of West Ontario Street, according to police records. Officers apprehended Murphy just before 3 a.m. Friday, June 23, in the 600 block of North Clark Street, records indicate.
