CHICAGO — A Chicago-based kimchi company has issued a recall on ten products due to possible Listeria contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Kimchi, a Korean side made of salted vegetables such a cabbage and radish, is regularly fermented and therefore less perishable. However, 5000 Years Food issued the recall on July 13 due to Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, which is typically found in unpasteurized milk and contaminated vegetables.

The Avondale-based company recalled its Sliced Cabbage Kimchi, Whole Cabbage Kimchi, Julrado Whole Cabbage Kimchi, Julrado Sliced Cabbage Kimchi, No MSG Whole Cabbage, No MSG Sliced Cabbage, No MSG Julrado Whole Cabbage, No MSG Julrado Sliced Cabbage Kimchi, White Kimchi and Baby Napa Kimchi.

The recalled products were sold under the 5000 Years Foods brand name in five gallon plastic tubs and smaller glass jars. Code information "09052021" through "09252021" is printed on the top of the lid.

The kimchi was distributed mainly in Illinois, but also saw nationwide retail stores before the F.D.A. issued the recall notice on Wednesday. The problem was identified through routine sampling that found Listeria inside the production facility. So far, no illness has been reported from the contaminated product.

"We, 5000 Years Foods, Inc., corrected all actions via FDA guideline and we are waiting for the environmental test result from a licensed laboratory," the company said in a statement.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in those with weakened or underdeveloped immune systems. About 260 people die from listeriosis, the disease caused by the bacteria, each year. Symptoms include high fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Ingesting the bacteria can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.
