More Kmarts To Close; Chicago Store To Stay Open
Locations in Oak Lawn and Elmhurst were among the 28 stores affected.

CHICAGO, IL — Twenty-eight more Sears-owned Kmart stores will soon close in addition to the 180 company stores already announced this year. The Chicago location at 3443 W. Addison St. will stay open, but stores in Oak Lawn and Elmhurst are shutting down. The closings were announced by Sears Holding Corp., which owns the stores and reported another quarterly operating loss.
Thanks in part to shoppers migrating to the web from the malls, Sears sales at stores open for at least a year fell 11.5 percent in the second quarter ended July 29, the company announced.
Total revenue fell 22 percent to $4.37 billion, mainly due to store closures, which shaved off $770 million of revenue, the company said. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest news for Chicago — or your neighborhood. And iPhone users: Check out Patch's new app.)

Dozens of Sears and Kmart stores have already closed this year as the company tries to overcome steep losses in sales and huge operating costs. Earlier this summer, the company announced it was closing its Harlem Avenue Sears store on the Northwest Side in September. The Hoffman Estates-based retailer also cut 400 corporate jobs, mostly from its headquarters.
