'Weed World' Van Bust Nets Nearly $98K In Pot Products: Prosecutors

Chicago police seized more than 6K grams of pot-infused items from the vehicle Saturday.

CHICAGO, IL — Medical marijuana might be legal in the state, but Illinois isn't California or Oregon. Driving around Chicago in a flashy van with the words "Weed World" across it eventually will generate the wrong kind of attention. The kind of attention that could include handcuffs and a court appearance if there's non-medicinal weed in the "Weed World" van.

An Alabama woman and a Georgia man are accused of driving a Weed World van in the River North neighborhood with more than 6,000 grams of pot products worth nearly $98,000, according to crime blog CWB Chicago. Police also found a loaded 9-millimetter handgun in the van, the report added.

Robin Moss, 51, of Birmingham, Alabama, and Bradly Griggs, 36, of Douglasville, Georgia, both were charged with felony manufacture-delivery of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana and felony possession of more than 5000 grams of marijuana. They are both being held in Cook County Jail on $50,000. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest news for Chicago — or your neighborhood. And iPhone users: Check out Patch's new app.)

Moss also was charged with felony possession of cocaine and drinking on the public way. Griggs faces an unlawful use of a firearm charge.

According to prosecutors, a man called 911 at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, and told police that two people in a green truck with the word "Weed" splashed across it in the 600 block of North State Street had offered him pot, CWB Chicago reports. Officers located the van near State and Erie streets and noticed an open Coors Light beer inside the vehicle, the report added.

As Moss was being arrested for the open alcohol container, Griggs told police that he had a gun in the van and a concealed carry permit for it. However, he said he left the permit at his home in Georgia, the report stated.

A police search of the van found the following items:

  • six heat-sealed bags of "green paste" suspected to be pot
  • eight Rice Krispies treats believed to be made with pot
  • 13 brownies thought to be laced with pot
  • bags of multi-colored lollipops suspected to be infused with pot

In total, 6,122 grams of pot products with a value of $97,952 were seized, the report stated. A loaded Ruger 9-millimeter with a 16-shot magazine also was recovered in the search, the report added.

The next court date for Griggs is Aug. 11, and Moss is set to appear again on Aug. 24.

Launched in 1999, Weed World Candies began using its "fleet of 'loud' vehicles" to sell pot-flavored lollipops in Chicago in 2013. Although the products have a pot flavor, they reportedly lack any THC, which has been a buzzkill for some customers. Weed World's website not only runs down Chicago's marijuana laws, it also features a YouTube video of its vans serving customers in the city.
