CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — Two Chicago Heights police officers were taken to the hospital Sunday night after officials said a driver ran a red light and crashed into a police car.

Police said a white Jeep Grand Cherokee was found in the middle of the intersection at 14th Street and Ashland Avenue Sunday at around 10:36 p.m. A police squad car was to the east of the intersection with "visible damage," Police Chief Tom Rogers wrote in an email to Patch.

Both officers inside the squad car were taken to Franciscan Health and then later airlifted to University of Chicago Medicine to be evaluated by trauma doctors, according to family members of one of the injured officers. As of Monday night, Rogers said both officers were released from the hospital.
