CHMS’ Gabrielle Jones Reigns as an IESA State Champion Sprinter

Chicago Heights Middle School (CHMS) 8th-grade student Gabrielle Jones showcased her mastery of track and field events at the recent 2025 IESA (Illinois Elementary School Association) championship meet held at the EastSide Center in East Peoria.

She not only retained her first-place title in the 200-meter Dash for the second consecutive year but also secured second place in the 100-meter Dash and the long jump, showcasing her athletic versatility and skill set.

Jones’s journey in track and field began at Chicago Heights Middle School in 2023 as a 6th-grader, where she finished fifth in the 200-meter Dash and long jump. This early success ignited her determination to become an IESA state champion.

As a 7th-grader, she returned to the state finals and realized her dream by becoming the 200-meter Dash champion. Her journey, marked by determination and perseverance, is a true inspiration. In addition to her 200-meter championship, she also finished 3rd in the Long Jump and 4th in the 400-meter Dash at the 2024 state meet.

As a result of her spectacular performance at the recent state meet, Jones received the award as the 2025 Class 4A Athlete of the Meet by the IESA.

“Gabby has proven that hard work and dedication are keys to achieving your goals,” said her coach, Jack Lira, who, along with fellow coach Alivia Kroeschen, accompanied Jones to the state championship event. “Don’t be surprised if she wins at the Olympics one day!”

This praise from her coaches is a testament to her dedication and a source of pride for the entire school community.

As an 8th grader, Jones’s performance as a Track and Field athlete throughout the year, especially at the state level, and her status as the most decorated athlete in CHMS history, earned her the Chicago Heights School District 170’s Jerry Colangelo Award. This prestigious award, named after the renowned sports executive and CHSD 170 alumnus, is a testament to both athletic and academic excellence. It is a testament to Jones’s hard work and dedication and is a source of pride for the entire school community.

Gabrielle Jones, estudiante de octavo grado de la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights (CHMS), demostró su dominio del atletismo en el reciente campeonato IESA 2025 (Asociación de Escuelas Primarias de Illinois), celebrado en el EastSide Center de East Peoria.
