CHMS Students Participate in Chicago Heights’ City-Wide Clean-Up

School District 170’s Chicago Heights Middle School (CHMS) proudly participated in the City of Chicago Heights’ city-wide clean-up initiative on Saturday, May 17, 2025, demonstrating the school’s ongoing commitment to community involvement and environmental responsibility.

Students, staff, and volunteers joined forces to beautify streets and public spaces throughout Chicago Heights.

The CHMS crew, working in the city’s Ward 3 near 7th Place, focused on cleaning up an alley filled with debris. Their efforts immediately improved the area and significantly contributed to the overall success of the city-wide initiative, making the community proud of their work.

The dedicated student volunteers included seventh-graders Yoalli Guzman, Nadia Guzman, Jayden Fernandez, sixth-grade student Kaiden Tardy, and eighth-grade student Darius Cristwell. Their work reflected the spirit of service and pride that defines the CHMS Spartan community.

Kenyea Beach, Chicago Heights District 170 Social Emotional Learning Coordinator, Chris Baikauskas, Principal of Chicago Heights Middle School and 4th-Ward Alderman for the City of Chicago Heights, participated alongside students throughout the day. Their presence, along with that of 4th-Ward Chicago Heights Park District Commissioner Michele Baikauskas, underscored the strong partnership between the school and local civic leaders, instilling confidence in the community.

“Our students showed incredible pride and purpose,” said Alderman and Principal Baikauskas.

“Seeing young people so invested in caring for their community is inspiring. The lessons they learn from giving back will stay with them long after the day ends.”

“This clean-up wasn’t just about picking up trash,” added Beach. “It was about empowering our students to be changemakers—giving them a sense of agency and showing them that their actions matter in their neighborhoods and beyond.”

The clean-up event, organized in collaboration with the City of Chicago Heights, was more than just a beautification effort—it was an opportunity for students to practice leadership, teamwork, and responsibility.

Chicago Heights Middle School remains dedicated to building community-minded leaders and eagerly looks forward to participating in future clean-up initiatives and service projects, sparking excitement and hope for the future.

La Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights (CHMS) del Distrito Escolar 170 participó con orgullo en la iniciativa de limpieza de toda la ciudad de Chicago Heights el sábado 17 de mayo de 2025, demostrando así su compromiso continuo con la participación comunitaria y la responsabilidad ambiental.

Estudiantes, personal y voluntarios unieron fuerzas para embellecer las calles y los espacios públicos de Chicago Heights.

“Esta limpieza no se trató solo de recoger basura”, agregó Beach. “Se trató de empoderar a nuestros estudiantes para que sean agentes de cambio, dándoles un sentido de autonomía y mostrándoles que sus acciones importan en sus vecindarios y más allá”.

El evento de limpieza, organizado en colaboración con la Ciudad de Chicago Heights, fue más que un simple esfuerzo de embellecimiento; fue una oportunidad para que los estudiantes practicaran el liderazgo, el trabajo en equipo y la responsabilidad.

La Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights sigue dedicada a formar líderes con mentalidad comunitaria y espera con entusiasmo participar en futuras iniciativas de limpieza y proyectos de servicio, generando entusiasmo y esperanza para el futuro.
