CHMS Student Analena Rodriguez Wins an SSERT Ride to School

CHMS 8th-grade student Analena Berrum Rodriguez has achieved a remarkable feat.

She was recently awarded a unique opportunity: a ride to school with members of the South Suburban Emergency Response Team (SSERT). Her prize was the result of winning a writing contest at the school, a testament to her talent and dedication.

School District 170 staffers Kristin Linde and Gretchen Sutherland won the SSERT ride-along at the South Suburban Humane Society Spring Gala.

Rodriguez, a student in Gina Rizzo’s ELA class, took the initiative to enter the contest because she aspires to become a police officer. This unique opportunity of a ride to school with SSERT members has further fueled her passion and provided valuable insights into her future career.

In her winning essay, Rodriguez expressed her genuine interest in the SSERT. She explained that she wanted to win the ride so she could ask the SSERT members questions, such as how they help people, how they stay calm in stressful situations, and what experiences they had while on the job.

SSERT Team members Joseph Sanders and Rob Lachapelle, along with Linde and Sutherland, picked up Analena at her home. They took her for a ride through town, making a special stop at Starbucks. There, she was treated to a coffee and a gift bag by Store Manager Danielle Young.

Analena's arrival at school was a memorable event, with her warm welcome captured in photographs and videos by staff member Sheldon Jones.

“This activity was a good way to support SSHS, a cause near and dear to my heart, while sharing an experience with a deserving student,” Linde said. “Analena was a most worthy participant in such a wonderful endeavor.”

The South Suburban Emergency Response Team is a multi-jurisdictional emergency response team currently comprised of thirty-four police departments in the south suburbs of Chicago. The team is responsible for protecting approximately 600,000 residents in an area that spans over 150 square miles. The response team provides member agencies with a tactical response to Critical Incidents.

“Esta actividad fue una excelente manera de apoyar a SSHS, una causa muy querida para mí, y al mismo tiempo compartir una experiencia con una estudiante que lo merece”, dijo Linde. “Analena fue una participante muy meritoria en una iniciativa tan valiosa”.
