CHSD170’s Dual Language Department Celebrates Latin American Cultures

The auditorium of the Chicago Heights Middle School was filled with color, rhythm, and pride on the evening of May 14 as the Chicago Heights School District 170 Dual Language Department hosted its annual Cultural Celebration. Students, families, and staff gathered to honor the diverse traditions of Latin America through an evening of music, dance, and poetry.

The celebration, a key component of the district’s educational program, was a collaborative effort between teachers and students across the district’s dual language programs at the Chicago Heights Middle School, Garfield School, Roosevelt School, and Washington-McKinley School. Months of preparation culminated in a dazzling performance spotlighting the rich heritage of countries such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Ecuador, and more.

Children dressed in traditional attire performed dances, sang songs, and recited poems that reflected the heart of their ancestral roots. Applause filled the room after each act, a testament to the unwavering support of the parents and the educators who cheered on their students, making them feel valued and integral to the event.

For many families, the event was a source of cultural pride and a chance to see their children thrive in a setting that honors their identity.

“Culture Night was a beautiful celebration of our students’ talents and heritage,” said Shannon Vera, CHSD170’s Director of English Learning. “Watching them sing and dance with such pride was truly inspiring.”

“I’m incredibly grateful to our dedicated teachers who planned every detail and made the event so special. The amazing turnout from families, along with the unwavering support from our district and community, made this a night to remember.”

The Cultural Celebration, which will continue to be a cherished tradition in Chicago Heights School District 170, is set to expand its reach and impact in the coming years, offering a powerful reminder that language and culture are key to building inclusive communities.

El auditorio de la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights se llenó de color, ritmo y orgullo la noche del 14 de mayo, cuando el Departamento de Lenguaje Dual del Distrito Escolar 170 de Chicago Heights celebró su Celebración Cultural annual. Estudiantes, familias y personal se reunieron para honrar las diversas tradiciones de Latinoamérica con una noche de música, danza y poesía.

La celebración, un componente clave del programa educativo del distrito, fue un esfuerzo colaborativo entre maestros y estudiantes de los programas de lenguaje dual del distrito en la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights, la Escuela Garfield, la Escuela Roosevelt y la Escuela Washington-McKinley. “La Noche de la Cultura fue una hermosa celebración del talento y la herencia cultural de nuestros estudiantes”, dijo Shannon Vera, Directora de Aprendizaje de Inglés de CHSD170. “Verlos cantar y bailar con tanto orgullo fue realmente inspirador”.

“Estoy sumamente agradecida con nuestros dedicados maestros, quienes planificaron cada detalle e hicieron del evento algo tan especial. La increíble participación de las familias, junto con el apoyo incondicional de nuestro distrito y la comunidad, hicieron de esta una noche inolvidable”.
