CHSD170’s Dual Language Department Celebrates Latin American Cultures

El Departamento de Lenguaje Dual del Distrito Escolar 170 de Chicago Heights celebra las culturas latinoamericanas

The auditorium of the Chicago Heights Middle School was filled with color, rhythm, and pride on the evening of May 14 as the Chicago Heights School District 170 Dual Language Department hosted its annual Cultural Celebration. Students, families, and staff gathered to honor the diverse traditions of Latin America through an evening of music, dance, and poetry.

The celebration, a key component of the district’s educational program, was a collaborative effort between teachers and students across the district’s dual language programs at the Chicago Heights Middle School, Garfield School, Roosevelt School, and Washington-McKinley School. Months of preparation culminated in a dazzling performance spotlighting the rich heritage of countries such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Ecuador, and more.

Children dressed in traditional attire performed dances, sang songs, and recited poems that reflected the heart of their ancestral roots. Applause filled the room after each act, a testament to the unwavering support of the parents and the educators who cheered on their students, making them feel valued and integral to the event.

For many families, the event was a source of cultural pride and a chance to see their children thrive in a setting that honors their identity.

β€œCulture Night was a beautiful celebration of our students’ talents and heritage,” said Shannon Vera, CHSD170’s Director of English Learning. β€œWatching them sing and dance with such pride was truly inspiring.”

El auditorio de la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights se llenΓ³ de color, ritmo y orgullo la noche del 14 de mayo, cuando el Departamento de Lenguaje Dual del Distrito Escolar 170 de Chicago Heights celebrΓ³ su CelebraciΓ³n Cultural annual. Estudiantes, familias y personal se reunieron para honrar las diversas tradiciones de LatinoamΓ©rica con una noche de mΓΊsica, danza y poesΓ­a.
