CHSD170's Garfield School Welcomes Citibank to Teach Children to Save

In celebration of April as “National Teach Children to Save Month,” CHSD170’s Garfield School recently welcomed volunteers from Citibank on April 23 to promote financial literacy among the school’s students.

The event marked the second consecutive year that Citibank volunteers dedicated their time and expertise, conducting engaging presentations focused on real-world money management and the importance of saving.

The volunteers conducted informative sessions for the school’s K-2nd-grade students, providing practical tips for saving money that the students can apply in their daily lives. The sessions also included an insightful overview of the banking profession, empowering the students with essential financial knowledge.

To ensure inclusivity, the volunteers delivered the content in both English and Spanish. This bilingual approach empowered all children, regardless of their language background, with essential financial knowledge that they can carry into their future.

The students enjoyed asking the bankers questions during the interactive presentation, and the event concluded with each student receiving a special Citibank piggy bank to begin their saving efforts.

"We are so appreciative of the partnership with Citibank to encourage healthy spending and saving habits even with our youngest learners," said Garfield Principal Diane Kostovski.

Kindergarten teacher Carol Saba added, "For a topic that is hard for students to grasp, the students really enjoyed the examples with the dentist, doctor, and mailman for saving money and income. They especially loved the piggy banks."

"The students had to really think about what they would want to save their money for," added second-grade teacher Brooke Graves. "After receiving the piggy banks, students came to school the next day with the banks semi-full and shared with each other what they wanted to buy on their 'rainy day' when their piggy banks are full."

Para celebrar abril como el "Mes Nacional de Enseñar a los Niños a Ahorrar", la Escuela Garfield de CHSD170 recibió recientemente a voluntarios de Citibank el 23 de abril para promover la educación financiera entre los estudiantes de la escuela.

El evento marcó el segundo año consecutivo en que los voluntarios de Citibank dedicaron su tiempo y experiencia a realizar presentaciones atractivas centradas en la administración del dinero en el mundo real y la importancia del ahorro.

Los voluntarios impartieron sesiones informativas para los estudiantes de kínder a segundo grado de la escuela, brindando consejos prácticos para ahorrar dinero que los estudiantes pueden aplicar en su vida diaria. Las sesiones también incluyeron una visión general de la profesión bancaria, dotando a los estudiantes de conocimientos financieros esenciales.

Para garantizar la inclusión, los voluntarios impartieron el contenido tanto en inglés como en español. Este enfoque bilingüe capacitó a todos los niños, independientemente de su origen lingüístico, con conocimientos financieros esenciales que pueden aplicar en su futuro.

Los estudiantes disfrutaron haciendo preguntas a los banqueros durante la presentación interactiva y el evento concluyó con cada estudiante recibiendo una alcancía especial de Citibank para comenzar sus esfuerzos de ahorro.

“Estamos muy agradecidos por la colaboración con Citibank para fomentar hábitos de gasto y ahorro saludables incluso entre nuestros alumnos más pequeños”, dijo Diane Kostovski, directora de Garfield.

La maestra de kínder Carol Saba añadió: “Aunque es un tema difícil de comprender para los alumnos, disfrutaron mucho de los ejemplos del dentista, el médico y el cartero para ahorrar dinero e ingresos. Les encantaron especialmente las alcancías”.

“Los alumnos tuvieron que pensar mucho en qué querrían ahorrar”, añadió Brooke Graves, maestra de segundo grado. “Después de recibir las alcancías, los alumnos vinieron a la escuela al día siguiente con las alcancías medio llenas y compartieron lo que querían comprar para cuando sus alcancías estuvieran llenas”.
