CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — A Lynwood resident and domestic violence survivor has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors at the Crisis Center for South Suburbia, a non-profit that supports victims of domestic violence.

Doranita Tyler currently owns an American Family Insurance in the south suburbs but spent the last few years volunteering on the crisis center's annual gala committee and has worked on the development committee as well as secured several grants for crisis center programs.

Almost 30 years ago, Tyler was a victim of domestic violence and sought help at the crisis center. According to her, advocating for services such as housing, education, counseling and emergency shelter through the crisis center is a "blessing."

"I freely share my story with women in similar circumstances as a means to encourage them to seek help and have hope," Tyler wrote in a news release.

Tyler's personal history in addition to her community outreach experience is what lead to her appointment, Crisis Center Board President Jennifer Kanacki told Patch.
