Fire at Under-Construction Walmart

A fire broke out Saturday morning at a Walmart under construction at Western Avenue and U.S. 30 in Olympia Fields. The 183,000-square-foot store was scheduled to open in October. A groundbreaking ceremony took place in October 2015. Firefighters from Olympia Fields, Chicago Heights, Park Forest, Glenwood, Homewood and Flossmoor responded at about 7 a.m. Police shut down Route 30 as fire crews worked on the blaze.

The building sits on a 16-acre property formerly occupied by an auto dealership. Olympia Fields officials worked for five years to lure Walmart to the village.
