List Of Accused Clergy Includes South Suburban Priests

A least a dozen south suburban priests had been accused of sexual abuse, and the public may not have known, a new report shows.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — A damning report that lists more than double the number of priests accused of sexual abuse than Illinois Catholic dioceses had earlier reported includes at least a dozen who served in south suburban churches during the past several decades.

They include a former Chicago Heights priest who was charged with possession of child pornography in 2015 while he was serving at a Chicago parish, a former Oak Forest priest whose accusations of abuse of young boys in 1979 later sparked a lawsuit and caused the Archdiocese to hire a public relations/crisis communications firm, and a man who was sent to a Homewood church as priest-in-residence after he had been removed from office amid allegations he sexually abused boys in Chicago.

The Anderson Report, released Wednesday by attorneys who represent victims of sexual abuse by priests, names about 400 accused priests, or about twice as many as those six Illinois dioceses have reported. Diocese lists often do not include accusations against priests that were not substantiated or accusations made against priests who had died. The Anderson report includes priests who were assigned to parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Diocese of Belleville, Diocese of Joliet, Diocese of Peoria, Diocese of Rockford and Diocese of Springfield, as well as religious clergy and lay persons accused of abuse. Many of the priests named in the Anderson Report were previously identified in court cases, but some do not appear on official diocesan lists. The Anderson Report also contains information from publicly available sources.

The report said it reveals "the horrifying scale of priests sexually assaulting minors to the present day." Authors wrote that they believe "that the Dioceses in Illinois have not publicly made available the full histories and their knowledge of their sexually abusive agents and employees."

The lists includes a synopsis of the allegations and timeline of where each priest served. The authors of the report note that most cases are allegations and have not necessarily been substantiated, and convictions are included.
