CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights will perform “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a musical comedy centering on a fictional middle school spelling bee and an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents who vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime.

While candidly disclosing hilariously, touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box, and they all learn a valuable lesson about winning and losing!

“It’s great to be able to focus our energy on something that truly is just a bunch of fun, especially in light of the past few COVID years,” said Laura Hilger, Marian Catholic’s Director of Speech & Theatre, and an alumnus of the school. “This play really allows our students to shine, giving each one a moment in the spotlight. And because this show is silly and ridiculous, everyone will have a great time.”
