New Numbers In Cook, Will Counties Will Get New 464 Area Code

The Illinois Commerce Commission said the change will not take place until 708 numbers, the current area code, run out.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — The Illinois Commerce Commission announced Monday a new 464 area code will be given to residents in south and west suburbs that currently use 708. The change comes as more residents patronize new telephone service providers in the area, the commission said.

The new area code is intended to supplement the telephone number supply, but won't change anyone's current number, officials reassured. Those who wish to get a new local landline, cell or paging device will likely be given the 464 code, though not until 708 numbers run out.

A spokesperson from the ICC told Patch this is not expected to happen until January.
