'Numerous' Leads In Crete Township Shooting That Killed Man, Critically Injured Pregnant Woman: Sheriff

A 23-year-old Indiana man was killed in the Sept. 2 shooting, and a 25-year-old pregnant woman was critically injured, police said.

CRETE TOWNSHIP, IL — Police are investigating "numerous" leads in a shooting that killed an Indiana man and critically injured a pregnant woman last month in Crete Township, the Will County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

Two people were found with gunshot wounds inside a car late Sept. 2 in the 2300 block of East Exchange Street in Crete Township.

Deputies found a black sedan parked in the roadway with multiple bullet holes and shattered windows. A preliminary search of the scene revealed approximately 40 shell casings in the area.

The driver, identified only as a 25-year-old pregnant woman, sustained gunshot wounds to the head and hand, while the male passenger was struck in the hip and buttock, the sheriff's office said. Deputies provided lifesaving aid until medical personnel arrived and took both victims to a local hospital.

The woman remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, the sheriff's office said.

The man—identified as Angel Torres-Lopez, 23, of Lowell, Indiana—was taken to Franciscan Health Dyer, where he died on Sept. 3, the Lake County Coroner's Office said.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, the Will County Sheriff's Office said.
