​Several Past CHSD170 Students Shine in Helping MCHS’ Marching Band Earn Another IL State-Championship

Former CHSD170 students were members of the Marian Catholic High School Marching Band, which recently concluded a highly successful competitive season, culminating in recognition as state champions for the 45th consecutive year at the Illinois State Marching Band Competition at Illinois State University.

Under the direction of Steven Pyter, students began preparing for the season in June. They participated in their first competition of the year at the Victor J. Andrew Marching Band Invitational and the Providence Catholic Marching Band Invitational. At both events, the band earned Grand Champion recognition.

Building on those championship showings, the band continued to refine its show and travelled to perform in Bands of America Super Regional events at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, earning first place in Class 1A and receiving recognition for Outstanding Music and Outstanding General Effect.

To culminate its season, the band headed once more to Indianapolis to perform amongst 108 bands at the BOA Grand National Championships. At the event, the band’s show, entitled Red Feathered Soul, featured musical selections by Viet Cuong, Ennio Morricone, John Rutter, and Michael Torke.

Following a moving preliminary performance, the band advanced to the semi-final competition, where it placed second in the nation in Class 1A, and received the award for Outstanding General Effect. The band missed out on being crowned Class 1A national champion by .3 points!

Former Chicago Heights Middle School students who played in the Marching Band included freshmen Aubree Kvasnicka, Jeremiah Tucker, and Erick Sinay, sophomores Kevin Rodriguez and Mariela Villanueva, and juniors Reymon Colin and Kaydence Norfleet.

In discussing the hard work and success of the MCHS Marching Band, Kvasnicka said, “We put so much time and dedication into this show, and I am so proud of my section and everyone in the band for what we have accomplished.”

“The Marian band is more than just a band; it’s a family, and I am forever grateful for the friendships I have made throughout this season.”

“Being with Marian Catholic’s Color Guard has given me the opportunity to truly grow into a new version of myself,” Norfleet added.

“It’s given me a different work ethic, determination, passion, and most importantly, a second home. My amazing directors and teammates are always going to stay in my heart, and I’ll be forever thankful.”

Entre los antiguos alumnos de la Escuela Secundaria de Chicago Heights que tocaron en la banda de marcha se encontraban los estudiantes de primer año Aubree Kvasnicka, Jeremiah Tucker y Erick Sinay, los de segundo año Kevin Rodríguez y Mariela Villanueva, y los de tercer año Reymon Colin y Kaydence Norfleet.

Al hablar del arduo trabajo y el éxito de la banda musical de MCHS, Kvasnicka dijo: "Hemos dedicado mucho tiempo y esfuerzo a este espectáculo, y estoy muy orgullosa de mi sección y de todos los miembros de la banda por lo que hemos logrado".
