South Suburban School Provides Free Haircuts and Mentoring
Illinois School's "Cuts and Ties" event prepares young men for graduation and life
PARK FOREST, IL-- May 14, 2025—In preparation for eighth grade graduation and life, male students at the Illinois School in Park Forest had a special day of grooming and mentoring on Thursday, May 15.
“Cuts and Ties” is a special event designed to celebrate and prepare 8th grade boys as they transition to high school, said Illinois School principal, Dr. Shernita Mays. It was a day of motivation, mentorship and style.
“We want our young men to look good when they graduate but more importantly, we want to give them skills that will help them succeed in life,” Mays said.

Barbers from Larry’s Barber College provided free haircuts. Students enjoyed a continental breakfast, spent time with male mentors from the school and community and heard from inspiring guest speakers. Mentors taught the students how to tie a formal tie. All of the young men were given a $100 gift card from JCPenney, a hygiene kit, a bottle of cologne and a black gift box containing a black tie.
