University Park Man, 19, Killed By Amtrak Train: Coroner

The man died Thursday morning after being struck at a crossing in University Park.

UNIVERSITY PARK, IL — A man killed by an Amtrak train in University Park Thursday has been identified, the Will County Coroner's Office said Friday.

Richard E. Laba Jr., 19, was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m. Thursday, at the railway crossing at University Parkway and Governor's Highway, the coroner's office said. His death was the result of a train vs. pedestrian crash.

University Park police were alerted just before 8 a.m. Thursday to a bicyclist struck by a train at the crossing. Police found the bicyclist, now identified as Laba Jr., unresponsive at the scene. Life-saving measures were attempted, police said in a release. The crossing was closed to traffic during the investigation.

University Park Police and Canadian National Railroad Police are investigating. Police from Monee, Amtrak and Metra are also assisting.
