1 In Custody, Motorcyclist Dead in Hit-and-Run in Crystal Lake

A 53-year-old Crystal Lake woman is accused of causing the crash that killed a man and seriously injured a woman.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — A motorcyclist involved in a hit and run in Crystal Lake Tuesday night has died, authorities said Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, authorities have arrested a 53-year-old Crystal Lake woman accused of causing the collision on Virginia Road at Berkshire Drive at about 7:37 p.m. and then fleeing the scene.

Evidence recovered at the scene quickly led investigators to the woman's sedan in the 900 block of Wesley Drive in Crystal Lake and Carolyn Terrell has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash, a class 1 felony, in connection with the hit and run. Additional charges against Tyrrell are expected, police said Wednesday.

The hit and run occurred when the red sedan hit a motorcycle while it was heading south on Virginia Road at Berkshire Drive at about 7:37 p.m., according to a news release from the Crystal Lake Police Department.

The motorcycle driver, a man, was initially taken to Northwestern Hospital in Huntley after sustaining life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead, police said Wednesday. His name is not yet being released as authorities work to notify his family.

A passenger on the motorcycle, a woman, was flown to Condell Medical Center with serious injuries, according to authorities. An update on her condition was not immediately available.

Both the man and woman were thrown from the motorcycle after it was hit by the sedan. The red sedan fled the scene and was last seen heading west on Berkshire Drive, police said.

Authorities were able to track the vehicle down within minutes of the collision, according to the news release.

The hit-and-run crash remains under investigation.
