Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana has joined #GivingTuesday, a first of its kind effort that aims to transform the way people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

Taking place Dec. 2, 2014, #GivingTuesday harnesses the power of social media to create a national movement that inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their communities. There is a day for thanks and two subsequent days for shopping. Now there’s a day for giving back.

Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana will be participating in the worldwide day of philanthropy by encouraging supporters to give money to fund the purchase of uniforms for girls in their signature after-school program GirlSpace.

GirlSpace enters low-income, at-risk communities and provides access to the Girl Scouting experience for girls who may not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the program.

“The simple purchase of a sash provides a girl with the feeling of belonging and a boost of confidence each time she adds a badge to her uniform,” said Nancy Wright, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

For their first year of participation in the #GivingTuesday campaign, the local Girl Scout council hopes to raise enough money to purchase 500 sashes for girls in their GirlSpace program.

Their efforts are in conjunction with the state-wide campaign Illinois Gives Big, powered by Donors Forum, which aims to raise $12 million for Illinois nonprofits from 100,000 individual donors in one day.
