1 Dead After Semi Slams Into SUV on I-90

A 54-year-old Chicago man was killed in the collision along I-90 in Des Plaines.

DES PLAINES, IL — A 54-year-old Chicago man was killed when a semi crashed into the back of his vehicle while stopped in heavy traffic along Interstate 90 Friday morning, authorities said. Andrew Szimon Jr. was taken to an area hospital following the collision on I-90 westbound near milepost 74.2 in Des Plaines and was later pronounced dead. The crash occurred when a the truck-tractor/semi trailer collided with a Szimon's Jeep Patriot at about 8 a.m. on Friday.

Two other vehicles, a Chevrolet Sonic and Nissan Titan, were also involved in the crash, according to a news release from the Illinois State Police.

The driver of the semi, Stepan Dehod, 41, of Hamtramk, MI, was taken to the hospital due to emotional distress. Authorities say he was not injured. The driver of the Chevrolet Sonic, David Hicks, 29, of DeKalb, and the driver of the Nissan Titan, Scott Owen, 42, of Chicago, were not injured.

The Cook County Coroner's Office determined Szimon died at 10:10 a.m. on Saturday due to injuries sustained during the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
