1. Construction for new Costco gas station, store could begin by end of year in Des Plaines (abc7chicago.com) — Des Plaines officials are moving ahead with a proposed Costco Business Center and gas station at 2200–2400 E. Devon Ave., with a final council vote expected Jan. 20 and construction possibly starting late this year. Neighbors have raised health concerns about gas fumes and exhaust, while the city emphasizes the project’s business-focused inventory and notes it would be only the second such Costco center in the Chicago area.
   

2. 2 Students Win Gilman Scholarships to Study in Australia (elmhurst.edu) — A Des Plaines resident, Elmhurst University student Patrycja Goloszewski, is spending three weeks studying international business in Australia and New Zealand thanks to a prestigious Gilman Scholarship. Alongside a classmate from Park Forest, she’s gaining cultural and professional experience abroad, while Elmhurst encourages more Pell Grant recipients to apply for future Gilman awards.
   

3. Go Bear! (journal-topics.com) — Several Des Plaines students were named “Best in Grade” in East Maine District 63’s annual winter card art contest, with their work recognized by the school board. A Morton Grove first-grader’s polar bear drawing was featured on the district’s official winter card, mailed to hundreds of community leaders and families. The contest drew more than 95 entries and marked its 10th year.
   

4. Mega Millions winning numbers for Tuesday, Jan. 6, $180 million jackpot (heraldtribune.com) — Des Plaines gets a brief spotlight here as the city where a ticket for a $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot was purchased in 2022, one of the largest lottery prizes ever. The piece mainly tracks current Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots, past billion‑dollar wins, and basic how‑to details for lottery players.
   

5. Village Looks To Future With Prestige In Past (journal-topics.com) — Mount Prospect has finally closed a long, costly legal fight over odor complaints from Prestige Feed Products, which ended manufacturing in December and is dismantling its plant. The village, along with Des Plaines, reached a settlement requiring Prestige to leave by the end of 2025, and officials now plan to use scientific experts to better vet future industrial tenants and protect nearby residents’ quality of life.
