DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Before summer is over, it's anticipated that Downers Grove residents will be lining up to cool off with treats from Andy's Frozen Custard. Crews recently broke ground for the custard shop, which will be located at Washington and Ogden.

“This is one of the more exciting developments on Ogden Avenue in a while," Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Bryan Gay told Patch. "Everybody’s excited about ice cream and the opportunity to go there.”

Gay said the team behind Andy's Frozen Custard anticipates the Downers Grove shop will be among the top five or ten locations from its roster of more than 300 stores.

“This was a long vacant site, kind of an eyesore in our Ogden Avenue corridor," Gay said.

Before becoming vacant, the site was home to a building that housed engineering offices. Crews demolished those buildings in early March to begin bringing the Andy's Frozen Custard building to life.

Gay said the development has been "one of those projects that we had worked on as a team for the better part of 18 months."

He said, “To finally see the ceremonial shovel go into the ground and have that big exhale and seeing it move forward is really exciting for us."

The 1,960 square foot restaurant will feature a two-lane drive-thru to accommodate more customers as they choose from concretes, sundaes, banana splits, take-home pints and other goodies featured on the Andy's Frozen Custard menu.

For his part, Gay said he's looking forward to indulging in the shop's vanilla custard once it opens. He might even add some of the Andy's Frozen Custard caramel toffee crunch to celebrate the occasion.

It's anticipated the Andy's Frozen Custard will be open by mid- or late August.
