DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Manhattan Project scientist, Downers Grove resident and Presidential Medal of Freedom nominee Dr. Dieter Gruen, 101, will speak at Avery Coonley School Sept. 14 for an event to benefit the Downers Grove Public Library.
“Dr. Gruen is a local hero - someone who has contributed greatly to his professional field as well as to his community through his love of the library,” Downers Grove Public Library Foundation Director and event moderator Anne Wick said in a statement. “He has and continues to live a fascinating life, and I’m also proud to call him a friend. I believe many in our community of all ages can learn from him, whether your interest is in science, libraries, or simply a life well lived.”
Gruen came to the United States in 1922 after fleeing Nazi Germany. He studied at Northwestern University and University of Chicago before working at the Oak Ridge site of the Manhattan Project. He was employed by Argonne National Laboratory for 60 years and also has over 60 patents.
