More Snow on the Way for Downers Grove

Alberta clipper-type system moving into the Chicago area Sunday night, with snow expected into the morning.

If you like snow, smile, if now, frown. Regardless, it looks like we’re going to need our shovels come Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for snow beginning at 10 p.m. Sunday through midday Monday, with 3 to 5 inches of snow expected along a line north of Rockford to Chicago, which puts Downers Grove close to the line of greatest snowfall. Light snow showers may continue through the afternoon.

The weather service says the storm system is well-organized and reminiscent of an Alberta clipper, a rapidly moving low-pressure system out of Canada that sometimes affect the upper Midwest and the Great Lakes region.

This one will bring snow to north-central and northeastern Illinois, as well as far northwest Indiana, according to the weather service. While snowfall in northern Illinois is expected to be 3 to 6 inches, with the greatest snowfall expected from Rockford to Chicago, south of that line, the amount of snowfall greater than 3 inches could drop off sharply, the National Weather Service said.

The National Weather Service advisory states that snowfall rates of as much as an inch an hour are possible at times, producing rapid snow accumulations on roads. The greatest intensity is expected between 11 p.m. Sunday and 4 a.m. Monday from Rockford to Marengo, and from 3 to 8 a.m. for the central and northern areas of the Chicago metro area.

A winter weather advisory for snow means the snowfall will cause travel difficulty, particularly, in this instance, during the Monday morning rush. Motorists should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility.
