Plows, Trucks To Battle Storm Around The Clock In Downers Grove

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The village of Downers Grove will deploy its salt trucks and snow plows around the clock as a winter storm approaches.

The winter storm warning takes effect at 12 p.m. Thursday and extends through 6 a.m. Saturday for Downers Grove. The forecast calls for consistent snowfall, dangerously low temperatures and winds that may gust up to 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

On Wednesday, the village's website shared an update that said its snow and ice control operations would be "running 24/7." Streets will be cleaned in "priority order" after an inch or more of snow has accumulated. Street plowing priority is determined by typical traffic flow on a roadway.

Downers Grove's streets are plowed per the following priorities, with crews aiming to complete all plowing as soon as possible:

• Priority one includes primary roads with high traffic or near schools and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. These streets are prioritized to be completely plowed within 12 hours after a storm ends, per the village's website.
• Priority two includes secondary roads with daily traffic of fewer than 2,000 cars. Crews aim to have these streets completely plowed within 12 hours after a storm ends.
• Priority three includes dead end streets and cul de sacs. Crews typically start to plow these areas as they work to complete priority two roadways. The goal is to have these areas fully plowed within 18 hours of the end of a winter storm.

Prior to snowfall, crews also treat roadways with an anti-icing solution made of salt brine, sugar beet solution and calcium chloride.

Drivers are advised that parking is prohibited on village streets once there has been three or more inches of snowfall.
