Police: Home of Downers Grove Murder-Suicide Burglarized
Silverware and several tools were stolen Monday night from a home in the 6200 block of Park Avenue, where the bodies of Thomas and Jennifer Smith were discovered June 19.

The home of a Downers Grove couple found dead July 19 in an apparent murder-suicide was burglarized earlier this week, police said.
Downers Grove police were dispatched Tuesday to the home of Thomas F. Smith and Jennifer M. Smith in the 6200 block of Park Avenue, where family members have been cleaning in the aftermath of the death investigation.
The family members told police that everything was in order when they left Monday night. On Tuesday, however, they noticed a fold-up step stool open under the attic hatch on the second floor ceiling. The door hatch was ajar and there was pink insulation on the floor of a nearby bedroom, police said.
Upon further inspection, the family members noticed that one of the home's exterior doors had been forced open and the wood frame damaged. They also noticed that a brand new Craftsman sawzall, a Stihl chainsaw and a tool box were missing from a utility room, police said.
The offenders also stole all of the forks, knives and spoons from the kitchen, according to the report.
The Downers Grove Police Department did not provide any further details.
Thomas and Jennifer Smith were discovered by Downers Grove police officers during a well-being check July 19.
Authorities ruled that Thomas Smith killed his wife before committing suicide. Both died of stab wounds, according to the DuPage County Coroner's Office.
