Snow Storm: District 58 'Unlikely' to Cancel School Tuesday

District 58 Superintendent Kari Cremascoli said a decision will be made no later than 6 a.m. After-school activities will likely be canceled.

Downers Grove school officials say it is "unlikely" classes will be canceled Tuesday due to the winter storm.

In a letter to parents Monday evening, District 58 Superintendent Kari Cremascoli said the administration is watching the weather reports closely and will make a final decision regarding school closings no later than 6 a.m. Tuesday. However, based on current reports, it is unlikely school will be canceled, she said.

Should District 58 call for a snow day, parents will be notified via email and telephone.

Although Cremascoli was not prepared to cancel school Monday night, she did say that after-school activities would likely be canceled.

"The decision to cancel after-school activities (Tuesday) will be made no later than 1 p.m. and communicated via email," she wrote. "You may wish to anticipate cancellation of after-school activities and plan accordingly."

As of 10 p.m. Monday, there were no cancellations in Community High School District 99.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning that is in effect from 3 a.m. to midnight on Tuesday. Light snow is expected to begin Monday night and will become heavier Tuesday morning and throughout the day.

The Downers Grove area can expect as much as seven to 10 inches, according to the forecast. Accumulation could reach one to two inches an hour, making snow removal difficult. 

The NWS also reports that winds might reach 25 to 30 mph, increasing the possibility of large snow drifts.
