Man Dies After Elderly Mother Accidentally Hits Him With SUV: Police

The collision happened Wednesday afternoon west of Elgin. A 63-year-old Hampshire man was killed in the incident.

KANE COUNTY, IL — A 63-year-old man has died after his mother accidentally hit him with her sports utility vehicle in her driveway west of Elgin.

The incident happened at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the home in the 11N200 block of Romeo Drive in Plato Township, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office. Police say the mother, an 85-year-old woman, was repositioning her 2016 black Lincoln SUV in her driveway when she accidentally stepped on the gas pedal.

Her son, who has been identified as Steven Ackmann, 63, of Hampshire, was walking in front of the SUV at the time and was hit by the vehicle, according to the news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Authorities are not sure at this point how fast the SUV was going when it hit Ackmann and also do not know if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the coslioin. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
