Man Killed Near Elgin After Mother's Foot Slips Off Brake: PD
Police say Steve Ackmann died after he was struck by an SUV that his mother was moving in her driveway when she accidentally hit the gas.
PLATO TOWNSHIP, IL β a 63-year-old Hampshire man was killed on Wednesday when police said he was struck by a vehicle driven by his mother while she was moving the SUV in the driveway of her Plato Township home on Wednesday, police said.
Steve Ackmann died after police said he walked in front of a 2016 Lincoln SUV being driven by his 85-year-old mother, Justine Ackmann, who lives in the 11N200 block of Romeo Drive in Elgin, the Kane County Sheriffβs Office said.
The accident took place just before 1 p.m. when police said that Justine Ackmann was repositioning the vehicle in her driveway. An investigation shows that her foot apparently slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal while her son was walking in front of the vehicle, police said.

The vehicle surged forward and struck the man, who was struck by the vehicle. It is not certain how fast the vehicle was traveling when it hit Ackmann, police said. Investigators did not indicate if Justine Ackmann was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, or if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
Life-saving measures were performed at the scene, but Ackmann was pronounced dead a short time after the accident. The accident remains under investigation.
